William and Sarah "Sally" Priscilla Bunch Daugherty moved to Ky. in 1791 then to Eastern Ten. in 1809 and then they went to Ark. in 1817 or 1819, before the forced removal of the Cherokees.
William was a Pastor and served as a County Judge too, in Rusk Co. Tex. He performed the first marriage there.
The following is an excerpt from a book on Rusk Co., done by the Rusk Co. Historical Commission:
Rev. William Daugherty, an early county probate Judge & Minister of the gospel, who performed 1st marriage in that Co., settled there, bringing his mother with them, in 1845, Old Alton Cemetery. Denton Co - Cemeteries of TX. Submitted by Betty Finley (2005).
Notes on Roach added by Carol Roach Nix (CRN):
This cemetery is south of Denton on F.M. Road 2181, across from a new school and next to the Hickory Creek Baptist Church. The land was donated by the Daugherty family, and four members of this family are buried within an area enclosed by four brick walls. They are Eleanor Daugherty, James Madison Daugherty, Rebecca Daugherty, and Robert L. Daugherty. Their names and dates are hand-carved into mortar on top of the west wall, but the carving is now almost illegible. There are six identical cement crosses evenly spaced in a row. According to Curtis Burch, these are markers Denton County placed on the graves of unclaimed bodies. There have been four previous surveys done: The Old Alton Cemetery Association list, Denton County Historical Commission in 1977 and an update in 1994, and listings from the book Peters Colonists, Their Descendants and Others by Louise Myers Young. According to the Denton County Historical Commission, Ellen Dougherty Shaeffer stated 4/27/94 that Daniel Boone Daugherty deeded Old Alton Cemetery to people of Denton in 1907 or 1909 and filed 1923 (Deed). Gordon Fry has original deed. |
