Burial | From the Findagrave website:
"The McGehee Family
Hustler Wade McGehee was born February 11, 1898. He was the only son of
William Car McGehee and Lucy Clack McGehee. (Some records show the spelling
Carr.)
William Car McGehee and his first wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ellen Taylor
McGehee, were married September 6, 1866, by James A. Barrow. They had seven
children. After Lizzie's death, Grandpa (Bill) McGehee married Lucy October 10, 1895.
They were married by 1. M. Frazer. They lived in Clifty, in Todd County, where he ran a
store, but moved to Lewisburg in 1904 before Hustler started to school. When Hustler
was 18 he decided he would like to farm. At that time they moved to the home outside of
town where Hustler and Ruth later lived with his parents until they built their own home.
Hustler's half brothers and sisters were Charles William (November 20, 1867-
August 31, 1922); Dorah (May 5, 1869 - ?17?); Lucian Augustus (August 2, 1871 - 7717);
Richard Colby (May 31, 1874 - 1876); Horace Greley (December 14, 1875 - ?177);
Nannie Lue/usually called Lula or Auntie (July 1, 1879 - August 14, 1968); and John T.
(November 23, 1884 - May 27, 1972). Hustler's half-sister Lula weighed three pounds
when she was born. Her sister, Dorah, made her a gown out of one of her father's shirt
sleeves.
My dad, Eldu McGehee, remembers as a child hearing his Grandpa McGehee talk
about being in the army during the War Between the States and eating chinkapins (also
spelled chinquapins, a dwarf chestnut according to Webster's Dictionary') to survive.
Momsie said he also ate papaws.
Hustler, his parents, and Auntie are buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery located
outside of Lewisburg, near Momsie's home. Grandpa McGehee's parents, John Car
(1818-1907) and Juliet Ann Pendleton McGehee (1828-1879), are buried at the Clifty
Cemetery in Todd COWIty. Part of the obituary for J. C. McGehee, who lived 1818-1907,
is in the family Bible. The portion that can be read is as follows:
Clifty
J. C. McGehee died at his home Wednesday, August 28, of cancer. He was 89
years, 2 months, and 28 days old. He moved here from South Todd over 60 years ago
and has acted as postmaster about 30 years. He was a faithful member of the Baptist
Church. Besides his wife, six children survive him: W. C. McGehee of Lewisburg; Mrs.
P. S. Latham, of Elkton; Mrs. A. J. Kenner, of Sharon Grove; W. A. McGehee, T. H.
McGehee, Mrs. J. G. . . .
(The W. C. McGehee of Lewisburg was Hustler's father.)" |
