Conclusion:
Based on the records I have been to able find via various sources (FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, Rootsweb, etc), I believe that the Birth/Death Certificate is the most plausible/legal document that supports Lucy A Hodges (nee Johnson) life span (1861-1940).
Discussion:
The only other records we have are the 1910 Census, 1920 Census, and 1940 Census. All of these have conflicting birth dates for Lucy; ie, (1) the 1910 Census suggests she was born in 1865, (2) the 1920 Census suggests she was born in 1871, and (3) the 1940 Census suggests she was born in 1874. Considering the 1910 Census data was directly supplied by Lucy, it would seem to be the most plausible of the 3 Census' we have. The person who supplied the data in 1920 is unknown. The person, Lorene, who supplied the data in 1940 was the daughter of Lucy's step-daughter (Beddie Bryant).
The 1910 data directly provided by Lucy is the most plausible; however, it would have been nice if she provided the "correct" date of 1861.
All the data (including the Birth/Death Certificate) show that Lucy spent her time in Muhlenberg and Christian Counties. The 1940 Census was taken in Christian County and that is where the Coroner notes that she died. The fact she was born in Muhlenberg and was buried in Muhlenberg is to be noted.
