Ruth Smith Obituary and Family Listing Published in the Rochester(IN) Sentinel, Monday, February 5, 1979 Mrs. Ruth SMITH, 96, Kewanna, died at 2:20 a.m. Sunday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen ANDERSON, Kewanna. She was born July 11, 1882 near Kewanna to John A. and Nancy HARVEY BARNETT. She married Oliver SMITH Nov. 29, 1902 in Kewanna; he died Oct. 20, 1957. She was a member of the Kewanna United Methodist church. Surviving with the daughter are three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Eight sisters, three brothers, two half-sisters, a half-brother and a grandchild preceded in death. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Harrison-Metzger funeral home in Kewanna with the Rev. BARNETT, Kewanna, retired rural mail carrier, died at 1 a.m. today at Woodlawn hospital. He was 75 years old. Born July 16, 1874, near Kewanna, he was the son of John A. and Nancy HARVEY BARNETT. In October, 1897, he was married to Nita B. GILLESPIE, who preceded him in death in August, 1945. He was a member of the Kewanna Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges and a branch of the Rochester I.O.O.F. Survivors include a son, Alec [BARNETT], South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Edith COSTELLO and Miss Enid BARNETT, both of Kewanna; two granddaughters; four sisters, Mrs. Charles TROUTMAN and Mrs. Oliver SMITH, Kewanna, and Mrs. Candace ZELLERS and Mrs. Bessie SCHIRM, South Bend. The body was taken to the Harrison Funeral Home, Kewanna, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Henry F. She had been in poor health for 12 years. Mrs. Nelson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey BARNETT of Kewanna, was born Feb. 22, 1880. The body will be taken from the Harrison Funeral Home to the Nelson home where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. R. G. STRONG, pastor of the Kewanna Methodist church will officiate and burial will be in the Barnett Cemetery south of Kewanna. A resident of Kewanna, Mr. Smith was born Jan. 28, 1879, in Union township and had lived in that community his entire life. He was married Nov. 29, 1902, in Kewanna, to Ruth BARNETT, who survives. His parents were Samuel and Josephine MOORE SMITH. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer and a member of the Kewanna Methodist church. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Helen ANDERSON, Kewanna; three grandchildren; one brother, Bert SMITH, Kewanna, and several nieces and nephews. John Anderson Barnett Obituary and Family Listing From the Fulton Co Obituaries 1915 John A. BARNETT, 77, a widely known citizen of Union township and an ex-Fulton county auditor, died Wednesday evening at his home in Kewanna, following an illness caused by complications. Mr. Barnett has been active for 40 years in the political and civil life of Kewanna and Union township. In 1887 he was elected county auditor on the republican ticket, serving until 1891. In 1896 Mr. Barnett left the G.O.P. going to the populists, which during that year merged with the democrats. Previous to his election as county auditor, Mr. Barnett served six yearrs as township trustee. About 12 years ago he left the farm, moving to Kewanna. Mr. Barnett was a veteran of the Civil war, serving for nearly four years, retiring as a non-commissioned officer, and was a member of the G.A.R. Mr. Barnett was married twice, his first wife passing away when young, leaving one son, William BARNETT, who now lives in Washington. He then married Miss Nancy HARVEY who survives him. Six children by this marriage are living: John BARNETT, Kewanna; Mrs. Chas. TROUTMAN, Gary; Mrs. Woodson NELSON, Kewanna; Mrs. Olive SMITH, Kewanna; Mrs. William SCHIRM, Kewanna and Mrs. James ZELLARS of Kewanna. Mrs. Clyde HENDERSON of this city is a great-niece. Besides his children Mr. Barnett leaves a large number of grandchildren. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and at one time was very active in this order.
