John Aleck Barnett Obituary and Family Listing Published in The Rochester News-Sentinel Thursday, March 2, 1950 John A. Barnett John A. BARNETT, Kewanna, retired rural mail carrier, died at 1 a.m. today at Woodlawn hospital. He was 75 years old. Born July 16, 1874, near Kewanna, he was the son of John A. and Nancy HARVEY BARNETT. In October, 1897, he was married to Nita B. GILLESPIE, who preceded him in death in August, 1945. He was a member of the Kewanna Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges and a branch of the Rochester I.O.O.F. Survivors include a son, Alec [BARNETT], South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Edith COSTELLO and Miss Enid BARNETT, both of Kewanna; two granddaughters; four sisters, Mrs. Charles TROUTMAN and Mrs. Oliver SMITH, Kewanna, and Mrs. Candace ZELLERS and Mrs. Bessie SCHIRM, South Bend. The body was taken to the Harrison Funeral Home, Kewanna, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Henry F. Catherine Nelson (nee Barnett) Obituary and Family Listing Catherine Nelson Mrs. Catherine NELSON, 66, a life long resident of Kewanna, died at her home at 8 o'clock this morning after being seriously ill for several weeks. She had been in poor health for 12 years. Mrs. Nelson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey BARNETT of Kewanna, was born Feb. 22, 1880. The body will be taken from the Harrison Funeral Home to the Nelson home where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. R. G. STRONG, pastor of the Kewanna Methodist church will officiate and burial will be in the Barnett Cemetery south of Kewanna. She is survived by her husband, Woodson NELSON; a son, Philip [NELSON], and a daughter, Mrs. Lillian INGRAM of Kewanna; four sisters, Mrs. Josephine [TROUTMAN], and Mrs. Ruth SMITH of Kewanna, Mrs. Bessie [SCHIRM] of South Bend, and Mrs. Canda ZELLERS of Mishawaka; one brother, John BARNETT; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. John Anderson Barnett Obituary and Family Listing From the Fulton Co Obituaries 1915 John A. BARNETT, 77, a widely known citizen of Union township and an ex-Fulton county auditor, died Wednesday evening at his home in Kewanna, following an illness caused by complications. Mr. Barnett has been active for 40 years in the political and civil life of Kewanna and Union township. In 1887 he was elected county auditor on the republican ticket, serving until 1891. In 1896 Mr. Barnett left the G.O.P. going to the populists, which during that year merged with the democrats. Previous to his election as county auditor, Mr. Barnett served six yearrs as township trustee. About 12 years ago he left the farm, moving to Kewanna. Mr. Barnett was a veteran of the Civil war, serving for nearly four years, retiring as a non-commissioned officer, and was a member of the G.A.R. Mr. Barnett was married twice, his first wife passing away when young, leaving one son, William BARNETT, who now lives in Washington. He then married Miss Nancy HARVEY who survives him. Six children by this marriage are living: John BARNETT, Kewanna; Mrs. Chas. TROUTMAN, Gary; Mrs. Woodson NELSON, Kewanna; Mrs. Olive SMITH, Kewanna; Mrs. William SCHIRM, Kewanna and Mrs. James ZELLARS of Kewanna. Mrs. Clyde HENDERSON of this city is a great-niece. Besides his children Mr. Barnett leaves a large number of grandchildren. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and at one time was very active in this order. As a member of the community Mr. Barnett was known for his decided convictions which made him a great many friends and also enemies. Funeral Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the home in Kewanna. James John Zellers Obituary and Family History Published in the Rochester(IN) News-Sentinel, Friday, May 4, 1945 James J. ZELLERS, 71, father of County Commissioner Murlen Zellers, passed away at a South Bend nursing home late Thursday of complications which followed a hold-up attack by thugs a year ago. At that time when he was robbed by unknown assailants, he was beaten about the head, and as a result was never able to give a coherent account of the attack. His condition since had been more or less critical. Born near Kewanna in 1874, he was the son of Henry and Margaret (BARRETT) ZELLERS. His life, until about 20 years ago, when he moved to South Bend, had been spent almost entirely in Fulton county where he engaged in farming and business as a hardware merchant in Kewanna and later as a druggist in Rochester, where for some time he operated a drug store where the New York Candy Kitchen now stands. He was a member of the Kewanna Baptist church and of the Gleaners Lodge. For the past several years he has been employed as a millwright in South Bend. The deceased was twice married, first to Norma FULLER, who preceded him in death, and later to Candace BARNETT, who, with four sons, Murlen [ZELLERS] and Arthur [ZELLERS] of Kewanna, Byron [ZELLERS] of Logansport and Ralph [ZELLERS] of South Bend; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret DUDAC, Mrs. George JOHNSON and Miss Elizabeth ZELLERS of South Bend; one step-son, Earl FAHLER, and a brother, D. H. ZELLERS of South Bend; a sister, Mrs. Clara COSGROVE of Culver; 20 grandchildren, four of whom are in the armed service, and five great-grandchildren, survive. The remains will be brought to the Harrison funeral home in Kewanna on Sunday where final rites will be held at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Interment will be made at the Kewanna IOOF cemetery. Marjorie E Zellers Obituary and Family Listing Marjorie "Aunt Lib" Zellers, 96, of South Bend, IN passed away at 3:55 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2007 in Healthwin Specialized Care Facility, South Bend. She was born on July 11, 1910 to James J. and Candace T. (Barnett) Zellers. On May 9, 1936 she married Ralph Baldwin. Marjorie is survived by twenty-six nieces and nephews and many many great great nieces and nephews. Five brothers, Viron, Murle, Arthur Zellers, Earl Fahler and Ralph Zellers; two sisters, Margaret A. Zellers Dudeck and Georgia A. Zellers Johnson all preceded her in death. Six grand nieces and nephews also preceded her in death. Marjorie lived in the South Bend Mishawaka area for sixty-two years moving here in 1920. She worked for Wilson Brothers, Emmco Insurance Company and at Shippers Dispatch, Inc. from 1948 to 1970 when she retired. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, March 9, 2007 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Burial will follow in Barnett Cemetery, Kewanna, IN.
