John J. Carter, son of James and Catherine Carter, was born in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, on April 30th, 1834. When a small boy he moved with his parents to the pld Carter homestead (now part of the Thomas Neff farm, northeast of Kewanna). On the 1st day, of January, 1857, he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Barnett, of this union eight children were born viz.; Ern. Emmma R. Wilson residing east of Kewanna, Indiana, Mary E. When the war clouds arose in the south, threatening the Union of the ha state, deceased enlisted in Co. E. 87th of Regt. Ind. Vol. Inft, was elected Sergeant of his Company. He was mustered out in June, 1865 and returned to his wife and three children, where he lived an upright life. Held civil office by the choice of his neighbors.
He never joined any church but was a firm believer in One Supreme, Omnipotent, Omniscient, Divine Being. He was of a jovial disposition, opposed to litigation, never sued any one in his life time; was true to his friends and charitable to his enemies.
He has been a great sufferer for more than 'a year a complication of diseases which culminated in death on Friday about 7:30 p. m., aged 80 years, 7 months and 28 days. "Behold, the silver-cord having been loosed, the golden bowl broken, our Comrade's body returns to Earth, the spirit to God who gave it."

Despondent because his wife had refused to live with him, Fred CARTER, age 22, a son of James CARTER and a well known young man of Kewanna, committed suicide Monday afternoon by shooting himself through the heart. The act took place at the home of his grandfather, J. J. CARTER, who lives in Kewanna. The young man left the family after the dinner hour and went to his room up stairs. After remaining there for a few minutes, he shot himself with a revolver. He was dead before a physician could be summoned.
Fred Carter has been married twice and was the father of one child. His first wife passed away several years ago. His second wife left him during the summer and refused to come back.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of his father near Kewanna. He leaves a father, mother, wife and two sisters.

Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Harrison chapel in Kewanna for William J. CARTER, 53, Indianapolis, Fulton county native, who died Thursday night in General hospital, Indianapolis.
Mr. Carter was born April 30, 1907, in Fulton county to James and Minnie CANFORD CARTER. He was married to Marguerite FRAZIER who survives.
Also surviving are three brothers, Thomas [CARTER], Kewanna; Fayette [CARTER], Ruford, Idaho, and Merle [CARTER], Laporte; one sister, Mrs. Nellie GREER, R.R. 1, Kewanna.
The Rev. Carl YOUNT will officiate at the services and burial will be made at the Grass Creek cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

The funeral services for Florence May Demerly, wife of J. L. Demerly,who died Saturday night, will
be held at the residence at 614 Fifteenth street, this afternoon at 1 o'cock. Services will be conducted
by the Rev. Kendall with Interment in Round Lake cemetery in Fulton county.
Survivors are her husband, J. L. Demerly, three children, Willard age 14, Grace, 11 and Annabelle, 9;
parents, Mr. and 'Mrs. James Carter, Grass Creek; five brothers, John Carter, Sheerville, Ind., Thomas, William, Fayette and Merle of Grass Creek, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Steel, South Whitley, and Nellie Geer of Kewanna.
