The Texas Revolution erupted in 1836, after Texas declared its independence from Mexico. Mexico responded by invading Texas, where General Santa Anna won decisive victories in the battles of the Alamo and Goliad. The war ended at the Battle of San Jacinto (about 20 miles) east of modern day downtown Houston) where General Sam Houston led the Texas Army to victory in 18 minutes over a portion of the Mexican Army under Santa Anna, who was captured shortly after the battle. The conclusion of the war resulted in the creation of the Republic of Texas - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Revolution |

Burial | Zackariah Calvin Beckham was born in 1824 in Tennessee. Zackariah moved to Arkansas and married Elizabeth Casey in 1843 in Parthenon, Newton County. They had thirteen children. When the war came, Zackariah enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K of Hill's Arkansas Cavalry. He enlisted on June 7th, 1863 at Clarksville, and served until he was wounded in the right leg at the battle of Pilot Knob, Missouri on September 27th, 1864. He was captured and sent to the Yankee prison at Alton, Illinois. Zackariah died there from 'gunshot wound/disease' on January 17th, 1865. This marker is probably a cenotaph. Likely, Zackariah was buried near the prison, but it is possible that his family retrieved his remains and returned him to Walnut Cemetery.
