Frederick Ellsworth Carter Obituary and Family Listing Tuesday, September 29, 1914 Rochester Sentinel - Rochester, Indiana Despondent because his wife had refused to live with him, Fred CARTER, age 22, a son of James CARTER and a well known young man of Kewanna, committed suicide Monday afternoon by shooting himself through the heart. The act took place at the home of his grandfather, J. J. CARTER, who lives in Kewanna. The young man left the family after the dinner hour and went to his room up stairs. After remaining there for a few minutes, he shot himself with a revolver. He was dead before a physician could be summoned. Fred Carter has been married twice and was the father of one child. His first wife passed away several years ago. His second wife left him during the summer and refused to come back. A sister of the deceased committed suicide several years ago by drinking carbolic acid. It is said at the time that the act was caused by a love affair. In 1906 he married Nellie Carter. She survives with three daughters, Mrs. Irene Fall, Plymouth, Mrs. Minnie Clark of Kewanna, and Mrs. Hazel Carr of Winamac: three sons, Clarence of El Paso, Texas: James of Star City, and Philip of Peru; 16 grandchildren and 37 great- grandchildren. Also surviving are a son, Richard L. King, Frankton; two brothers, James Greer, Alpine, Texas, and Bud Greer, Brownwood, Texas; a sister, Hazel Carr, Kewanna; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Rodefer officiating. Burial will be in Grass Creek Cemetery. She was born May 19, 1907, at Star City, Ind,. to the late Leo and Nellie (Carter) Greer. She was married on Jan. 27, 1926, to Arvin O. Carr, who preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1987. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. She is survived by three daughters, Betty Leazenby and Beatrice Ann Clark, both of Newaygo, and Barbara (Jon) Gast of Kewanna, Ind; one son, Don (Mary Lou) Carr of Lakeville, Pa,;18 grandchidren, 29 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren. one step-great-great grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews. Hazel was employed as an operator for the United Telephone Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1972 as assistant supervisor for the Winemac office. At her request cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held at Peasant Hill Cemetery at Lake Bruce, Ind., at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of doner's choice.
