Dora Alice Downs (nee Smith) Obituary and Family Listing Deaths and Funerals Mrs. Dora Downs, pioneer resident of Muskogee, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Val- entine, at Oklahoma City. Mrs. Downs was the widow of Edgar C. Downs who was sexton of Greenhill! cemetery for many years. She had resided in Oklahoma Cityy for past 10 years. She is survived by her daughter, grandson, Lieut. Carroll Valentine of Albuquerque, N. Mex.: granddaughters, Mrs. Jack Bullard of Muskogee, Mrs. A. B. Gilliland of Oklahoma City and Miss Elain Gilli- land of Oklahoma City. Services will be held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the Petering funeral home. Rev. L. C.| Wolfe of the Central Baptist church} will officiate. Downs Had Been Em- ployed at Greenhill Since Sev- eral Years Before Statehood TO BURY HIM TOMORROW Edgar C. Downs, 69) for more than a score of yours sexton of Greenhall Cemetery, died early last night at the home of his stepdaughter, Mrs Leo Valentine, 1149 Locust street, following a long illness. Mr. Downs was a well known figure around Muskogee and until his illness a few weeks ago had been custodian of Greenhill cemetery since several years before statehood. He is survived by his widow, three sons: W. E. Downs, Seattle, Wash.: G. B. Downs, Tulsa; and C. L. Downs, Los Angeles; and two daughters, Mrs. Valentine, and Mrs. Vida Unger, Roswell, N. M. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Central Baptist church, Rev. W. W. Chancellor officiating. The body is being held at the Petering-Furry Undertaking home. Pall-bearers wilt be E. C. Hoffman, John Hill, W. H. Cunningham, J. T. Elliot, G. A. McBride and Herman Bresser. Jane Ann Smith (nee Troutman) Obituary and Family Listing SMITH — At Maple City, Kas, May 25th, 1903, of dropsy of the heart, Jane, wife of Oscar E. Smith, aged 75 years. Mrs. Smith was visiting relatives at the time of her death. Her maiden name was Jane Troutman. She came to Kansas twenty-one years ago from Macon county, Ill., and resided in this county afterwards. An aged husband and five children survive her. The children are Mrs. Sarah Cain, of Brazilton; Henry H. Smith, of Pitts- burg; Mrs. Dora Heizer, of South Haven, Kas.; Mrs. Mary Ryan, of Fredonia, and John E. Smith, of Girard. Oscar E Smith Obituary and Family Listing Oscar E. Smith was born in Mont- gomery County, Kentucky, October 2, 1826, and died in Girard, Kansas, Julv 22, 1911, aged 84 years, 9 months and 20 days. When a small boy his parents moved to Fulton County, In- diana. He moved to Decatur, Illinois, in 1867, and then to Kansas in 1881, locating on a farm near McCune. In 1883 he moved to Brazilton, Kansas, where be resided until March, 1911, when he came to Girard with his daughter and husband. His wife died 8 years ago, He was married to Jane Troutman in 1848. To this union eleven children were born, six of whom have preceded him to the better land. Those living are Mrs. Sarah Cain, John E and Henry Smith of Girard, Mrs. Mary A. Ryan of Fred- onia and Mrs. Dora Hiser of Chicago, Ill. One brother and a number of children are also left to mourn his de- parture. He was converted and united with the Christian Church un- der the preaching of Alexander Camp- bell, when quite a voung man.
