Name | Oliver P Gillam Obituary and Family Listing
Morton Gillam, 61, farmer residing
northeast of Burlington in
Ervin township, western Howard
county, was found dead in the
barn lot late Saturday afternoon.
He had been dead about an hour
when found by members of the
family. Hogs in the lot attacked
the body, mutilating the
face. It is believed that death
was due to heart trouble and
that the action of the animals
had occured after the man
had fallen. About three o'clock
Mr. and Mrs. Gillam went to the
barn to do the evening chores.
After remaining with her husband
for a short time Mrs. Gillam
returned to the house. Upon
the failure of her husband to return
to the house during the
hour following Mrs. Gillam returned
to the barn to find the
reason for the delay. It was then
that she made the gruesome find.
Driving the animals away from
the body the woman succeeded
in removing it from the lot and
summoned aid. The Howard
county coroner was called to investigate
the case. Mr. Gillam
was born on the farm where he
died and with the exception of
about 3 years he had always lived
there. About 4 years ago he
moved to New London and lived
there until a few months ago,
when he returned to his farm. He
was widely known and was held
in high regard. In addition to
the widow he is survived by two
sons, Chester, of Muncie, and
Elmer of New London, two
brothers, James of Ervin township,
western Howard county,
and John of Kokomo. and a sister.
Mrs. James Barber, the wife
of Reuben Barber, of Missouri.
