Michael L. O'Connor, age 60, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, at his home in Ottawa. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, at Wilson's Funeral Home in Wellsville. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, also at the funeral home. Interment will follow services in the Wellsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Michael O'Connor Memorial Fund in care of Wilson's Funeral Home, P.O. Box 486, Wellsville KS 66092.
Michael LaVern O'Connor was born Feb. 15, 1949, in Ottawa, Kan., the son of Charles W. O'Connor Jr. and Frances Lucille Williamson. He grew up in the LeLoup/Wellsville area where he attended school. He was an avid football player at WHS and graduated in 1966. In 1968, Mike married Rita Reyes in Dodge City, Kan. They later divorced. In 1977, he married Beverly Olivas in Ottawa. They later divorced as well. Mike held various jobs throughout his younger years including harvesting wheat as a teen, doing construction, he owned and operated Mike's Bikes and also worked for Hallmark. In 1967 Mike applied for and obtained a laborer position with Santa Fe Railroad. He worked there 29 years, eventually becoming the track supervisor. He retired in 1996. Mike was a fan of the KC Royals and Chiefs and enjoyed all kinds of car racing, having raced stock cars in his younger years. Mike was also a gun collector and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Michele Dean, of Ottawa; son, Mike O'Connor II, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Carlie Olivas; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Jerry Foster, of Ottawa; daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Jeff Brinson, of Princeton, Kan.; daughter, Debbie Lee of Gardner, Kan.; a brother, Chuck O'Connor and his wife, Gail, of LeLoup; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nephews and one niece. He is preceded in death by his parents.
