Obituary
Donald Fuller Obituary and Family Listing March 7, 1936 - Aug. 29, 2019 Donald Eugene Fuller, 83, passed away on Aug. 29, 2019, at the Canterbury Gardens in Longview, WA. He was born March 7, 1936, in Stuart, NE, to Floyd and Hazel Fuller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, his parents and his brother, Richard. Don received his bachelor's degree from Wayne State College and went on to earn graduate degrees at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Iowa. He studied at Oxford University in England on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. His first teaching job was as an English instructor at West Leyden High School in Franklin Park, IL. He went on to become the Dean of Academic Programs at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Don married Judith Kay Hildenbrand in 1963, and the couple moved to Longview in 1985 when Don became Dean of Instruction at Lower Columbia College. Even after his years as a college dean, he loved to return to the classroom whenever he could. He retired in 1998. The Fullers lived in Longview for 33 years. Don was a board member of the Cowlitz County Historical Society and pursued many interests over the years. He belonged to the Longview Library's Page Turners book group. A gourmet cook, wine connoisseur and gracious host, he wrote a bi-monthly food column, 'Fuller on Food', for The Daily News in Longview for more than a decade. In his columns, Don told stories about food as well as sharing carefully tested recipes. At home, he grew roses, winning several awards locally and in Portland. A committed gardener, Don grew other flowers as well as vegetables, and the Fullers' home garden was a showplace. Don and Judy shared a love of traveling, music, good books, art, opera, theater and the companionship of their dachshunds and one very special Scottie Terrier, Isabelle. Aside from his other pursuits, Don did his own printing of lithographs, designed and made polymer clay jewelry, built miniature furniture for shadow-box scenes, and learned to play a Native American flute. He was truly a 'man for all seasons'. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 1428 22nd Ave, Longview, WA. Donations in Don's name may be made to the Lower Columbia College Foundation, 1600 Maple St, Longview, or to Community Home Health and Hospice, 1035 11th Ave, Longview.
