Biography
Sergeant, Confederate Army, Civil War Served in the 5th Co., Battalion Washington Artillery Military information provided by Sons of Confederate Veterans Born in New Orleans to John O'Brien and Emelie Marie LaSere. Emile O'Brien spent a life devoted to civic activities and being known for his big heart. When the Civil War broke out Mr. O'Brien was attending school in New York according to his obituary, however, the 1860 census shows him attending college in Bardstown, Ky. He hurried home and enlisted in the Fifth Company, Washington Artillery. He went to the front with his company, but was later transferred to the First Co., Regular Louisiana Artillery with the rank of lieutenant. Often called the "Father of Southern Yachting", Commodore O'Brien was a cotton press owner and pioneer yachtsman. He served seven years as Commodore of the Southern Yacht Club and was the owner of the Zoe, one of the first big cabin sloops in southern waters. He was also one of the organizers of the Gulf Coast Yachting Association. The O'Brien family were pioneer cotton press men of New Orleans. After the war Mr. O'Brien took up that profession and was one of the owners of the Orleans Press. He sold the business abt 1899 to retire. About 1869 he married Miss Kate Mushet. His wife and sons, Robert M. O'Brien and Emile O'Brien, Jr. survived him. His known siblings were Edward Eugene, Emma Mary and Clara Margaret.
