Auto Accident
April 19, 1951 - Wright County, MO NELSON VAN BUREN SHAMEL, about 66, from near Competition was fatally injured and his two companions hospitalized in Lebanon late Tuesday evening after their car went out of control and plunged off Highway 5 just south of the Grove Spring junction. He died in the Wallace hospital shortly after he was admitted for treatment of a crushed chest and multiple lacerations. A passenger in the car was 77 year old Sam Hickman. He is receiving treatment for a possible skull fracture and shock. His condition was termed as serious. Also injured was Rexford Lee Shemwell about 58 who was driving the car. He was hospitalized with a fracture of the jaw and was the least injured of the three. Apparently the trio were driving south from Grove Spring and on the sweeping curve the car went out of control, left the road, went through a high wire fence, flipped several times and came to rest in an upright position several feet from the roadway.
