Obituary
Steele Barnett Obituary and Family Listing Steele Barnett passed away on August 10th, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born August 5th, 1922 in Tulsa, Okla., to Francis and Victor Barnett. He was joined two years later by his sister Jean and four years later by his brother Fitzgerald. He graduated high school in Tulsa and in 1939, went to the Forestry School at the University of Idaho, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. All went well until Dec. 7, 1941. Steele joined his classmates in registering for the service on Dec. 8th. He was called into Army Reserve service in 1942 and eventually assigned to 103rd Infantry, where he was a Squad Sergeant in Intelligence and Reconnaissance. Like so many in his generation, he didn't tell war stories but wrote instead "Like other GIs, we just did whatever needed doing, what ever might help get the victory or help each other." After the war, he returned to the University of Idaho, married Gwen Hughes, graduated and joined the State of Idaho Forestry Department. Steele later worked for Boise-Payette Lumber Co which became Boise Cascade Corp. During his time in Boise, he was involved in politics, served as a deacon in the Episcopal Church and as a regent for the University of Idaho. Steele and Gwen had three children: Carol, Susie and Larry. He later moved to Portland, Ore., to work for the Western Wood Products Association. He met and married Nerina, and joined her three children; Jim, Michael and Sherry. Those are the facts. Here is the man: Steele had a love of the outdoors, knew how to start a good campfire, find his way in the woods and share that knowledge with others. He was intelligent, had a fantastic memory and read the paper from back to front everyday. He had a strong work ethic, good sense of right and wrong and a delightful self-effacing sense of humor. Those of us who knew and loved him will miss him dearly. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/idahostatesman/name/steele-barnett-obituary?id=13228010

Barnett, 74, a native of Rochester who was associate editor of The Tulsa Tribune and a civic leader in Tulsa for decades. Mr. Barnett last visited the city in 1963, when he recalled with pride that he got his first inspiration for a newspaper career from two of the city's earliest, most distinguished editor -- Henry A. Barnhart and Albert W. Bitters. He was a carried boy for The Sentinel, published by Barnhart, and later was printer's devil, press operator and reporter. On The Republican, owned by Bitters, he was a typesetter as well as reporter. Mr. Barnett died Feb. 26, after 12 years of failing health. Funeral arrangements and burial were in Tulsa. After leaving Rochester, he attended the University of Wisconsin and became sports editor of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison. The newspaper was owned by Richard Lloyd Jones. In World War I, he served two years with the Army, overseas as a second lieutenant in the infantry. After the war he returned to Chicago, but quit to rejoin Jones who had moved to Tulsa and bought The Tribune in 1919. Barnett went to Oklahoma City in 1920. He was managing editor of The Tribune for 15 years, then for five years was national advertising manager, becoming associate editor about 1940. In Tulsa, he was a commander of the American Legion Post, president of The Chamber of Commerce, in the latter post taking a leading role in locating the Douglas aircraft plant there. In 1942 he was appointed director of defense transportation in uTulsa and also was president of the eight-state Southwest Valleys Association, launching an effort to correlate the Arkansas river and its tributaries into an authority similar to Tennessee Valley Authority. His wife, the former Frances Large of Chicago, also took a leading part in Tulsa civic activities. she died in 1962.
