Maryann Elizabeth Mae Sanders died Oct. 29 at her home in Woodburn at the age of 83. She was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Bonesteel, S.D., to Lloyd and Louise Willoughby. Her family moved to Empire, Ore. in 1935, and she graduated from North Bend High School in 1941. During World War II, she joined the WAVES, which she loved being part of, and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Long Beach, Calif., where she met Charles E. Sanders. They were married Feb. 6, 1947, in Glendale, Calif. Her son, Charles, was born in 1948, and her daughter, Candice, was born in 1950. The family moved from North Hollywood to Brookings in 1960. In 1986, she and Charles moved to Woodburn, then to Redmond in 1987. They lived there until 2003, when they returned to Woodburn. She used to sew, making clothes for herself and family, and often baked cookies and cinnamon rolls, even sending boxes of Christmas cookies to her kids long after they had left home. She was active in church groups in Brookings and in Redmond. In Redmond, she joined a quilters group, learned to quilt, and was proud of all the quilts she had a part in creating. She loved to read and was often working on a jigsaw puzzle. She kept in contact with many close friends, including friends she made from her time in the WAVES, and was devoted to her family.
