Eileen Snowden Obituary
MATTOON -- Eileen Snowden, age 79, of rural Mattoon, passed away at 7:58 a.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2004, at her residence. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Father Dennis Kollross celebrating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. this (Friday) evening at the Schilling Funeral Home with a Biblical Wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Eileen was born May 30, 1925, in Decatur, a daughter of Roscoe S. and Cecelia Marie (Mahoney) Churchman. She married her sweetheart, Ivan Thomas "Tom" Snowden Jr. on April 24, 1948. Survivors include her loving husband, Tom Snowden of rural Mattoon; her six sons, Dr. Ivan Thomas Snowden III and wife Marianne of Charleston, John Douglas Snowden and wife Brenda of Sneedville, Tennessee, William Snowden and wife Sandra, Dr. Richard Michael Snowden and wife Elizabeth, Robert Lee Snowden and wife Jean, and David Snowden and wife Kimberly, all of Mattoon; her sister, Shirley Anderson of DesPeres, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, Angie Jordan of Mattoon, Sean Snowden of Boston, Massachusetts, Jonathan Snowden of Frankfurt, West Germany, Amanda "Mandy" Newlin and husband Bill of Mattoon, Tony Mathias and wife Jennifer of Cooks Mills, Toby Snowden of San Diego, California, Andy Snowden of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Brian Snowden and Alexandra Snowden, both of Mattoon, Ryan Snowden of Centralia, Patric Snowden and Ian Snowden, both of Mattoon, Brendan Snowden of Equador, and Bart Snowden of Urbana; six great-grandchildren, Paige Jordan, Mia Cunningham and Connor Evans, all of Mattoon and Abigail Mathias, Jacob Mathias and Alyssa Mathias, all of Cooks Mills. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Kay Probst.
Mrs. Snowden served as a cadet nurse in the Navy during World War II. She received her training as a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, serving for twenty years at both the Mattoon Memorial Hospital and Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. Eileen was very devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching birds and all forms of wildlife around her rural home.
