Susie May Carter (nee Gibbons) Obituary and Family Listing Published in The Rochester Sentinel Friday, July 11, 2003 Susie M. Carter May 1, 1907 – July 10. 2003 Susie Mae CARTER, 96, Life Care Center, formerly of 222 E. Sixth St., died at 2:35 p.m. Thursday at Life Care Center. Born in Sturgis, Ky., to Dan and Nina EASTERDAY GIBBONS, she married Estel S. "Duke" CARTER May 28, 1935, in Rochester. He died Nov. 15, 1969. Along with her husband, Mrs. Carter owned The Peoples Cafe in Rochester and managed the Rochester Schools cafeterias. They operated the restaurant at the Rochester Sale Barn for many years and managed the cafeteria at Geneva Center, Rochester. Mrs. Carter was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was in the ladies circle and was a Sunday School teacher. She belonged to the Rochester Order of the Eastern Star and Evergreen Rebekkah Lodge. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Jeannetta ALBERTZ, Santa Claus, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death with her husband were five sisters, Lucille CURTIS, Callie EVERETT, Virginia SCOTT, Hallie UNDERHILL and Dora Lee REEVES, and four brothers, William, John, Joseph and Charles STAATS. Funeral service and Eastern Star service are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, with Rev. George HAPNER officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
